Jonas has only recently taken up his new role as Bishop and commander of the Hospitalliers in Trier. He has spent some time in thought considering what to do about the fractured Church and is in his study listening to the wind outside riffle against the towers and tiles of his new home. Even though spring is approaching, the wind is chilly and winter hasn't yet left Trier. Listening to the wind, he moves closer to the fire and warms his hands. He is standing there when Aymon, one of his page's quietly opens the door and slips into the warm room. Jonas can tell by the way the Aymon shivers, it must be cold in the hall. Lord Bishop, several emissaries from Novgorod have arrived, including one knight gray with a black Tau cross on his shield. Would you like to greet them personally at this time, or should we put them up for the night and have the wait to speak with you in the morning?

OOC: Taylon Maignart (PC) is a member of this group. Figuring the knight gray is the most important person, that is why Jonas is selecting to meet with him first.

IC: Jonas knows Jamie seems to have allied with the Judicators, so they should be friends. From what Jonas knows of them, they are under St. Cuthbert as well. Jonas is not sure if they are located in Riga or Novgorod, but he thinks it is probably Riga.

Jonas responds to Aymon, Have the knight gray see me now. The others can wait in rooms that are nicely prepared for them.

Have Dreith (clr 6) come and join the discussion. Also, I'll need the names of the others when they check in, and the knight gray when he is introduced.

Dreith is going to be there mainly to correct Jonas on any mistakes he might make. He can interupt him in order to do this.

Jonas checks with Dreith and his own knowledge to make sure his facts are straight, then waits for Aymon to let the knight gray in with introduction.
---------------------------------------------------
At the fair (Trier Shopping), Jamie wants to make Jonas a magical item...a Lyre of Building. Possibly another one if that isn't available. Mainly just need a DM approval.

OOC-Jonas would know that the Judicators are a strange and controversial group of monastic monks, crusaders, and paladins. In the early years of the Church they served as the self policing arm of the Church and had the charge of finding heretics, traitors, and abominations, and witches and bringing them, or bringing them in for trial and penance. Those duties have slowly eroded and the Church of the West barely recgonizes them at all any more, having given many of their duties over to the Flagellants, The Inquisitors, and the Order of the Pentacle. In the East, there are no Judicators in Byzantium or the south. The city of Riga and the Empire of Novgorod, as it is now being called again, are the only places where the Order is active and influential in any capacity. In the West, Jonas, would have found a small number of them in Artois at the Abbey of Aes Dana and a few more in isolated monasteries in the Hebrides island chain. Jonas would also know the Judicators don't use titles like Sir or Deacon, or Father etc...They simply call themselves, Adrian, The Judicator, Miles, The Judicator and that is all. Jonas would also know from records and stories from jaime and the Winter Festival, that the Judicators have had more success at curing Lycanthropy, than any other group or organization.

IC-Aymon leaves to see that all is done as the Lord bishop wishes and Jonas would believe that Aymon is brighter and has more potential than he lets on. While he is warming himself by the fire and preparing for his interview, Dreith knocks and enters. He looks..anxious. And...a bit uncertain as he bows, Lord Bishop, I have done as you asked. The Knight Gray, calls himself Eddard the Judicator and did not look tired at all, while the others, Bishop Romendacil, Prelate Golikov, Prelate Virushy, and Sister Svetlana looked worn out and more than happy for the chance to rest before holding an audience. I also noticed some tension or apprehension between the Judicator and the others. Eddard always stood apart and offered them no help, not even to Sister Svetlana when she stumbled out of her stirrups and onto the cobblestones. I'm glad you are not seeing him alone. Be wary of him. I'm not certain we can trust him. There is a strangeness to him. After that, Dreith would bow again before leaving and returning shortly with the solemn looking dark eyed man flanked by four of the Hospitalliers. Jonas can feel tension from everyone but the dark eyed man. There is a serene, gentle look on his face as he walks unarmed and unarmored into the room, Lord Jonas, Bishop of Trier, I am Eddard, the Judicator. Eddard does not bow or show any other sign of deference and Jonas can tell the Hospitalliers are irked to no end by the man's insolence.

Jonas is a little surprised Aymon was pretending. He would have expected it from someone Lotan sent, but not a Hostpiallier.

Jonas is happy another Bishop has come, it would be good to talk to him in the morning.

Without saying anything, Dreith would realize Jonas wants him there mainly to add to Jonas' credibility in the Hospitallier order. There is no need to see him alone. It sounds as if this Eddard is a little short on his manners.

As Eddard enters the room: Hello Eddard, what brings you to our lands? Jonas doesn't give the customary movement for the four Hospitalliers to leave his side, waiting to do so if Eddard will give Jonas a sign of deference. A little petty, but will likely amuze the Hospialliers.

OOC-Aymon is not a Hospitallier. He is not even trained with weapons as far as Jonas knows. Aymon is a page, a socially higher and more trusted servant than normal, but still a servant.

IC-Eddard takes little time in looking at Jonas, I was sent to protect the Bishop and his party in their travel here and to look after them during their stay. The influence of the Byzantines on the whole of the Church concerns us. We do not trust them. I'm certain you have some idea why. I came to find out about you and whether you are a man of the cloth or a political appointee. I can tell you are early into your studies and will venture yours appointment was more political than divine calling. It is a common practice among Lotan and his fellow Byzantines. A practice that has weakened the Church and in some cases, betrayed it. Seeing you of independent will tells me you are clever enough to avoid Lotan subsuming you, yet still manage to gain enough of his favor to acquire this appointment. That makes you dangerous and requires me, as their protector, to attend any meeting you have with the Bishop or any in his retinue. If that is satisfactory to you, I will take my leave now and see you in the morning. If it is not, we should discuss the terms of our stay in your home. Eddard says all this with a rather sleepy expression on his face. He is not the least bit worried or concerned Jonas is going to attack or try to harm in any way.

No one was afraid of Jonas physically. Jonas is not strong in body, but he is strong in mind.

Jonas nods, Mainly a political appointee, though I have always followed St. Ogma and the church. I negotiated the surrender of Ulrich and brought the Hospitalliers back into the Church of the West.

Yes, I do know why. It is cause for concern.

I have no problems with you attending the meetings. I suggest that you stay clear of the Templars. They are staying at the southern edge of town.

Eddard gives Jonas a serious, half sad smile, as he bows Lord Bishop, not all the Templars are evil. I believe that many of them still hold to the faith and are only misled by those fallen to evil. Remember your friend Jamie's tale of Sir Renaud Humbert hunting her in the Ardennes. Now that she revealed to him the Truth, he has become her ally. This knowing how to seperate the redeemable from the evil is one of the more harrowing aspects of our conflict. By your will, I shall take my leave now. Eddard gives another slight bow and takes his leave. Jonas would realize how the tenor and stance of Eddard changed when Jonas spoke honestly with him. He would also note how once Eddard bowed, the Hospitalliers settle back a little. Jonas is not used to being around knights and might find it a bit surprising, and useful, how much pride and honor play in their reactions.

Jonas is a little surprised Eddard knew about Jamie. Their alliance was supposed to be secret from everyone. He had tried to take steps to make sure, and Jonas wanted to work mostly in the church to undermine Lotan even more. Oh well, what was done was done.

Jonas nods when Eddard talks about the Templars not being evil, but the Templar men in Trier were sent by Lotan's closest minion and had not yet come to the light.

Jonas gives the motion to ease up on the guarding when Eddard bows, as the Hospitallier four guards relax a little.

Jonas pauses as Eddard begins to turn, Do the others know about her? It was an important little fact, so that the talks could progress faster.

OOC: Note Jonas already has some information on San Domenico Loricato here: Another Jonas Thread Post 205884

Jonas has one final line of questions Eddard , What can you tell me about San Domenico Loricato? Specifically within the St. Kargoth clergy.

Jonas also thinks where San Domenico Loricato might be buried and how to eliminate this radical following that seems to have corrupted St. Karoth.

Lord Bishop, Jamie Boggett, The Red Witch of the Ardennes travels with Carillo the Judicator. He has told us what the two of them has accomplished so far. Soon, they plan to start hunting two Nabassu demons the necromant Vermo has let loose. Vermo himself is dead. He is one of the Byzantines Cardinal Silakova exposed and chased out of Novgorod. Vermo had masqueraded as a Flagellant priest with the blessings of San Domenico Loricato. The Flagellant Order was not always as it is now. There was a time they did more good than harm and served a worthy purpose. San Domenico Loricato's father paid a bribe to have him ordained as a priest. When Loricato found out, he sought penance. During this time, Loricato metof Peter Damian, who promoted penitential self-mortification. It is through his vigorous embrace of this practice that Dominic Loricatus has become most well known. We believe one of these two is most responsible for corrupting the Flagellant Order and then the Kargothian Knight's Templars. The bishop of prelate Virushy can tell you more of these matters. Eddard stops to look at one of the Hospitallier guards and gazes at him for several moments. Jonas isn't certain what the Judicator is doing, but there is more to it than just looking. When Eddard turns back to Jonas, the guard is pale and a slight sheen of sweat can be seen on his forehead. Cardinal Silakova said you spent some time in the Red Witch's company over Yule in Venice. That is all I know of your alliance or friendship with her. We know of Sir Renaud's change through Carillo. If I have overstepped my bounds in believing there is more to your relationship, the fault is entirely mine.

Jonas takes a slight look at Dreith, and checks to see if a spell has been cast by Eddard.

Jonas puts Eddards comments to rest, It is not a romantic relationship with Jamie, her heart belongs to another.

Jonas then continues, This Cardinal Silakova seems to be well informed. We should get to learn more of this San Domenico Loricato's corruption. Especially if he is granting spells to his followers in the church. I guess I'll speak with bishop of prelate Virushy in the morning about it.

It was good to speak with you, so that we may speak more openly in future meetings.
Jonas is ready to dismiss Eddard. His point was that both sides now know a little that they are likely working on the same side.

Jonas is going to talk to Dreith at night about the following:
1. His thoughts on Eddard and the rest of the visitors.
2. If it is possible to have good undead (sort of like deathless from Eberron). Jonas is willing to put money into research if Dreith thinks it might prove useful.
3. If it is possible to cut off San Domenico Loricato followers from his granted spells (like raising the guy might achieve that end).

OCC-Jonas would know from various stories and rumours of a legendary "White Vampire," who happens to dwell in the Hapsburg Dominion, which is considered part of the Kingdom of Novgorod. The White Vampire is said to be good, a one time Paladin, bitten and cursed while fighting vampires. The paladin's faith and strength of will has allowed him to resist turning evil, so the story goes. Jonas has also heard of Spectral Guardians who are almost always "good" people who died and now reside at or near their death sites guarding the area.
He would also know from doing research that if a Saint died and then ascended, raising them would bring them back to life, making them mortal and denying them the ability to grant spells to followers. If the Saint ascended before mortal death, raising them will have no effect, because they never died.

IC-Dreith like the bishop and Prelate Virushy, he doesn't trust the Judicator or Prelate Golikov. Golikov has already twice been found out in the hall, 'wandering,' as he put it and promptly escorted back to his rooms. Dreith is positive Golikov is a follower of St. Hardig or St. Dirk and many of them are known to be thieves and spies. As for the Judicator, the man appears exactly as he is, which worries Dreith. There has to be something more behind the Judicator's calm facade. Dreith just hasn't yet found anything. He would tell Jonas that Eddard is not always mindful of the law and should be watched closely. (Dreith found out that Eddard is Neutral Good, I've always found it hard to put alignments in proper game terms for play. Bishop Romendacil is lawful good, Prelate Golikov is chaotic good, Prelate Virushy is neutral good, and he wasn't able to find anything out about Sister Svetlana, as she went straight to her rooms and asked not to be disturbed in her prayers. )
In the morning, all four guests appear at breakfast, refreshed and in good spirits. Eddard doesn't speak with any of the others but Sister Svetlana and then only briefly to help her intrepret a religious psalm she is reading.
When Jonas arrives, they all stand and clap, except Eddard, who nods his head slightly and pays more attention to Jona's guard and attendants than Jonas himself.

OOC: Need to take notes on all the missions for Horseman when he returns. Jonas Trier Treasury for money allocation. No problem with the alignments, Jonas has a ring of mind shielding.

IC: Jonas figures San Domenico Loricato likely died before ascending, but he'll have his men do research on the subject and how to accomplish the mission. Olthuis, he is your 9th level Wizard he is a Wizard(Diviner- no Necromancy)6th and Cleric 3rd with Domains of Law and Knowledge, follower of St Cuthbert will be put on this mission (+4500 gp).

Jonas is very interested in this White Vampire and good undead. He will send Clr6 and 3 Clr5 (+4500 gp) to research this.

Jonas nods back to Eddard and raises his hand for the ret to stop clapping. It was odd what Eddard was doing. Jonas has Baldwin (ranger 9) watch Golikov, Rgr5 watch Eddard, Rgr5 watch Sister Svetlana. The rangers were usually good at spotting things, but perhaps the rogues might be better.

Jonas is going to want to speak later with bishop and prelate Virushy together privately if they aren't forthcoming with the group.

Jonas addresses them...making sure to use their proper titles, Greetings friends. I'm glad your journey went well. Please come forth and tell me what matters you wish to discuss. Jonas is going to let them start the conversation, though it is likely near the same as Eddard had said.

*Edit: Jonas is not above considering blood banks for good 'White Vampires'. Sort of like a benefit for protection type of arrangement, if it would help stop the dead from rising to support Vecna and other enemies of the Church of the West.

OOC-Eddard is a Judicator and was using one of his detection abiities to check out the room.

IC-Bishop Romendacil stands and holds out his hands in greeting to Jonas and kisses him on both cheeks and the forehead, if Jonas allows, if not, the bishop remains standing, Jonas, we have come greet the new leader of he Hospitalliers and the Bishop of Trier. In the past, we in Novgorod and Riga have always found a more sympathetic ear from the Hospitalliers and Trier than we have from the Byzantines and Aqualonians. We practice the faith of the Saints somewhat differently than you and the Byzantines. It is customary for one of us to come and greet any new Bishop in Trier and hopefully have you act as mediator in the scholarly debates over ritual and practice that often occur between us and our western brethren. Eddard is a fine example of some of these differences; Lotan chooses to use Flagellants and Kargothian Inquisitors to fill the role the Judicators once held within the Church. We've come to gain some understanding of your own position on these matters.

Jonas is fine with what Eddard seems to be doing.

Jonas allows the bishop to kiss his cheeks and forehead. Jonas nods as Bishop Romendacil says what he needs to say.

Jonas doesn't feel the need to share his official title as Bishop Co-Adjutor of Trier, they likely already know what that entails. Interesting, Ulrich didn't mention you, but he was in a hurry when I saw him. Jonas looks at Dreith, which likely confirms what Romendacil has just said.

Jonas accepts they hospitallity and warmth in his 'new' position: I'm glad to hear that our groups have been on such close terms, we shall continue to have a sympathetic ear. I would gladly be a mediator between you and the western brethren; it is a task that I’m becoming more comfortable with each day. As you probably know, I personally grew up with St. Ogma as my patron.

Yes, Holy Father Lotan does seem to prefer the Eastern Rite over the others. With the growing numbers of the Templars, one would think that a Crusade should be in the works for the Patron Saint of Warfare.

I'm not totally up to speed on all your the rituals and practices, but Ulrich gave me a book on Canon Law that is proving useful. I'll gladly go over your rituals and prepare for any mediations that are required. The Ulrich negotiations were very successful with on each side getting primarily what they wanted.

My position is that all three Rites need to come to an understanding to bring together a more united church. One cannot be greater than the others, for then the weakest will be attacked (OOC: Legs of a tripod). We must remember the story of Sir Derrick Whiterose, that shows that almost no one is above the temptations of evil. Constant vigilance is required.

Artifacts on Hand:
The Mace of St Cuthbert- Entrusted to Master Ishbok
The Dawn Star of St Hardig- Entrusted to Sir Heinrich
Tabard of the 1st(Great) Crusade- must be a devout follower of St Cuthbert to wear- Kept for special occasions (Seems appropriate for Dreith to have it on)
Staff of St O'Brien(must be LG to wield) contains a finger bone of St O'Brien(Lesser Saintly Staff)- Entrusted to Olthius

Bishop Romendacil concurs about the need for constant vigilance and hesitates a moment before waving Sister Svetlana forward. She steps up without lifting her head, keeping her eyes downcast towards the floor the whole time she speaks. Jonas would catch onto her voice and notice how she uses it in the same way a trained bard would to speak softly and still carry throughout the room, I'm from Riga and a member of the Mage Guardians. Cardinal Silakova is still uncertain on his position towards us, while Lotan and the Byzantines decry our existence even as they secretly support the influence and growing numbers of the Daughters of the Mayflower and the Order of the Pentacle. I was curious if you have yet chosen sides or met Master Arlensius Basilicus or Vicar Jurada?

The constant vigilance is likely seen as a swipe at Lotan, without actually saying it. Jonas motions to Dreith as he speaks.

Jonas speaks, noting that he does value the Hospitallier/Trier past agreements as past law for his office that influences current ones. I have not chosen sides or met with Master Arlensius Basilicus or Vicar Jurada, though Dreith might know of past involvement that would influence my decision.

I have heard of the Order of the Pentacle, and not liked all that I've heard of them. I haven't heard a lot of the Daughters of the Mayflower. I'll need to hear more of the Mage Guardians organization before deciding, of course.

Jonas holds up his pointer finger and whispers to Dreith To bad we don't have a university, especially since my alma mater [Bard University in Pont du Falx(Falcon's Point)] isn't free yet. What has been our past involvement with these groups? Jonas didn't exactly hide what he was saying, but the whispers indicate he does what them semi-private...some things he didn't 'officially' say to the visitors.

After Dreith's response, Svetlana can continue with her speech on the Mage Guardians. If Sveltlana heard Jonas, she might pick up that he wants a university in Trier...plus it would be a great cover for the Mage Guardians or others that Jonas couldn't openly support. Perhaps some sort of financial support, as Jonas doesn't have any money to allocate at the moment (before Horseman gets back at least)?!? Also, Sveltlana might have heard Jonas is creating a sub-order of Hospitalliers called the 'Order of the Broken Lance' made up of those that have other talents outside divine.

Dreith looks a little surprised, but recovers well, We've had little to do with the Mage Guardians, although I know they have helped Vicar Belros at Lone Tree Pass in constructing wards against Outsiders and undead. It's only in recent years that Lotan has forbidden the guardians to come to Lone Tree Pass that the evil dead have stirred with dangerous force. The two events possibly are related, though the Arch-Bishop and Cardinal Fraioli would strongly disagree with that assessment. The Judicators used to teach the Knights basic technigues and chants used in fighting various outsiders and undead. Outside the followers of St. Hardig, the Judicators and Mage Guardians know more about lycanthropy and curing it than any other Order. I must point out, Lycanthropy was destroyed and wiped out decades ago. There have been no properly recorded cases in over thirty years and those two were ruled as possessions by Cardinal DuPlessis and not lycanthropy. Dreith finishes and Svetlana waits to see if anyone else is going to speak before starting, The Mage Guardians are an old Order, some believe they existed before the Church, it's still a matter of debate. The Mage Guardians study matters Arcane and mystical and at one time held most of the Church's knowledge regarding such matters. Under Arch-Bishop Benefice I(1190-1191)those duties and most of the gathered lore of the Guardians was transferred from Riga and Novgorod to the Empire and locked away in the sacred vaults. Now, only the library in Estergrom contains much of that information. The Mage Guardians either practice arcane magic under the beneficent of St. Abelard, or the study it's functions and uses while remaining true priests themselves. The Mage Guardians have always aided the Judicators and others in conflicts with necromants, undead, and outsiders, using their knowledge of the arcane to compliment the Judicator's skill at arms.

OOC-Jonas would know that Arlensius Basilicus is now known as Master Arlen and is working somewhere in the Ardennes. Master Arlen is at the top of one of Jamie's enemies lists.

Jonas thought Arlensius Basilicus sounded familiar. It was another juggling act Jonas would have to be careful with. Jonas is going to have to check out this Holy Library in Estergrom sometime.

Responding to Dreith in whisper: Just because it is not recorded, does not mean that evil has abandoned it.

Back to Svetlana, Why do I need to worry about Master Arlensius Basilicus or Vicar Jurada? So who exactly the leader of your guild? Jonas might know the answer, but he wants to hear it from her.

Jonas would find Svetlana a curiosity and possibly dangerous. Jonas has never heard of the Mage Guardians and Svetlana has yet to lift her head up. She has stared at his feet the whole time and continues to do so as she answers, Master Arlensius Basilicus used to reside at the Mayflower Abbey just outside the city of Koln. The abbey burned down under mysterious circumstances and shortly after Arlensius and his mistress, Mesandre called up a number of inquisitors and flagellants to help them search the wreckage and surrounding forest. When we investigated the area, we found clear signs of summoning and four dead sorcerors. All of them fairly young, all but one orphans Arlensius took in. One of the bodies was a particularly powerful sorceress. She didn't die in the fire though. Something bit through her skull and cooked her alive. Arlensius and his cohorts of course denied everything and Vicar Jurada charged two of our members with false accusations against the Church, trafficking with Outsiders, and heresy and burned them in Koln's city square. After that, we watched their movements through spies and scrying. Arlensius definitely searched for something or someone, in particular he paid close attention to a potter's family. The Mahlers was their name. We later found the remains of a nabassu demon in the forest, killed by Carfaroth, the Red Hunter. He is an outlaw, at least according to Vicar Jurada. Carfaroth is half elven and won't talk to us and we can't find him in the forests. We suspect one of the Mahlers lived at the Abbey or visited or worked there. What they saw or knew is uncertain. We do know they disappeared from Koln the same week three of Jurada's fellow Byzantine priests died in the library and the thief Pieart stole a number of valuable religious texts, drawings and possibly more. This same Pieart was seen last Yule in Venice with Luther Von Bora. He has since disappeared. Did you see him? He stayed at the same Inn as you and the Red Witch.
