Jonas meet Bristol Gatewood and Camlin the Horsemaster in the camp of Aquitanian sentries on the west slope of the Mysty Mountains. The sentries were part of Legio Germanicus under the command of Belros Daman, Vicar of Germania.

From there the three along with Corvinus and five Corinthian spearmen headed west to scout Burgundia. The party fought strange hairless gnolls with strange magic, then crossed Moradin's Bridge under the kind word of Camlin who seems to have a way with Dwarves. The Dwarf Lyvalel joined the party . The party also learned that many of them were musicians and they started their own informal minstrel troupe. Once across Moradins' Bridge they were accosted by Templars who they got in a fight with and eventually took 3 of the Templars as prisoners. Jonas convinced the lead Templar sir Semolar to knight Corvinus and then they set them free.

Then the party found their way to the twin village of Fell and Thomm at the Hunsruck Slate Mines. Fell is a Dwarven village immediately outside the slate mines, while Thomm is a human village centered on being a way point for teamsters shipping slate tiles that are also prepared at Thomm. After much discussion the party decided to split. Corvinus, Lyvalel and a new Dwarf named Alberic went with the Corinthians and other dwarven miners over the Hunsruck Mountains to search for more mines and kill Old Flat Nose the Troll.

Jonas, Camlin and Bristol headed toward Palfrey Pass to find out what they can from the Palatinate from the Hospitaliers...............and to find out who these Hospitaliers are.....

The Party is just leaving Thomm riding along with the Teamsters toward Palfrey Pass. As the party nears the point where the Moselle brushes the Hunsruck Mountains the party can see a well cobbled new road filled with military and supply traffic headed toward Palfrey Pass from the city of Trier.

Do we see anyone on the road. If we do are they armed and wearing any colors? If we don't, Camlin will ride forward and examine this new road and look for tracks of any kind, on and off the road.

The party sees the majority of the tracking heading toward Palfrey Pass. Of that, most look to be food shipments. There are wagons filled with corn, squash, pumpkins, sacks of flour and even herds of cattle and sheep. There are dry goods, and wagons filled with spears and shields. Patrolling the road are mounted men and footmen all wearing white surcoat with a red maltese cross. Most horsemen wear conical nasal helms, and most footmen wear kettle helms and carry spears.

Occasionally there is traffic going toward Trier and away from Palfrey pass. Every so often all traffic yields to wagons moving toward Trier that are flying a black or white penant. When the party gets close enough they can see that the wagons flying a white penant have wounded soldiers on them, most in the these wagons have grevious wounds. There are amputations, soldiers blinded and many, many burned beyond recognition. Those with a black penant carry the dead, stacked like wooden logs on the way to the mill.

Thus far Camlin is able to count 14 wagons carrying wounded, and some 31 carrying the dead.

Jonas has the cart and all the loot. He thinks it is his now, as no one claimed it for party treasure. He would be willing to let people borrow at almost no cost, but would sell it at normal price.

Jonas is riding in the cart. He takes out the book when there is a slight stop and sees if he can read it. He casts Scholar's Touch on the The Trials of St Kargoth for a quick look into what it says. Hopefully nothing horrible happens like Jonas getting killed. He had found a A thin crystal disc in town.

The supply wagons passing infront of the party are marked with various symbols. Several with apple trees, others with a comb, some with a three masted ship, one with a beehive, another with a perched eagle, and one with a passive lion.

The party is halted as they approach the road by a strong faced man, with a grey streaked black beard, deep set eyes under a conical nasal helm. He walks up confident and mildly cautious. A very heavy two handed mace is carried over his broad shoulder.

Where are you men headed?
Who are you and what is trade.

Camlin will look the man over before replying, I'm Camlin of Koln. We are headed to Palfrey Pass and would like to speak with a member of the Hospitaliers. We have little to trade, but I'm a priest of ST. Epona and my companions are minstrels. If you could help us, we will use what talents we have to help you in return. It looks like you're having a hard fight of it. Who are fighting and why. Looking at all these maimed and crippled men, I hope it's for something more worthy than some man's title.

Camlin realizes that this man is detecting evil on them as he approaches.

I am Brother Gundel von Dee.
You may join us, another priest to care for the knights and their horses would be welcome, and song. Well, we can all use the light and brillance of song to raise our spirits in these troubled times.

This fight is about the righting of the foundations of the Church of the West, from those who would twists the pillars of the church into an overbearing church that would crush a mans soul and spirit or liberation of ones soul and spirit.

Come, we will travel together up Palfrey Pass.

Camlin is instantly wary of this man, not because he is evil or may intentionally do them harm, but because he seems something of a zealot or crusader. Camlin has always felt that 'too' much faith can blind men and create exactly what this man professes to fight against in the Church. Camlin will try and discreetly sign his feelings to Bristol and Jonas as he follows the knight up the road. He casually asks, How long has this been going on? I mean the battle for Palfrey Pass.

Camlin will give the man a dubious, but concerned look, I can't say much, I've spent the last few years in the wilds of Germania fighting the humanoids. Before that, I was in Caledonia, so you can see, I've been a bit out of touch with Frankish affairs and the going ons of the regular Church. What is a flagellant? and are they dangerous?

OOC: I'll try to not make as many bardic knowledge checks, but if I go astray from what my character knows or if he knows more, let me know or feel free to edit my posts. That should have been a knowledge religion check probably (would have been a 24).

Jonas waits silently, he wants Brother Gundel von Dee to give as much information as possible before devulging that he knows much more. Jonas can then bring in deeper subjects that will be much more deeper in subject matter.

Jonas remembers well the story of the Church of the West
and a series of old scrolls he read about he Hospitaliers. And after having read the Templars he can partially understand why the two are at odds, but its not a full explanation.

Seven Foundation Beliefs of the Church

Good
Honor
Truth
Justice
Compassion
Generosity
Faithfullness

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Founding of the Church

The Church of the West is the most powerful religion in the region. The church is so powerful that all noble titles must be confirmed by the church. This leads to serious political maneuvering in and out of the church. The church also holds considerable lands.

The Church of the West is a reasonably new religion, approximately 1300 years old. The church was founded by St. O’Brien, follower of St. Cuthbert and Orion. Orion is described in the holy text as the creator of the world. He is the only true god, but bestows great powers on mortals that have shown the most dedication to the ideals of Orion. Any such mortal is canonized as a saint in the church.

St. O’Brien took up the mantle of spreading the faith of St. Cuthbert at and early age. As he progressed in his study of the theology of St. Cuthbert he found an ancient cache of scrolls in a destroyed monastery. These scrolls became known as, “The Leaves of Creation”. In the Leaves of Creation it described how Orion came to create the world and the creatures of the world, how St. Cuthbert was canonized by Orion for holding justice before his own life. With The Leaves of Creation St. O’Brien went on a 40 year mission to spread the word of Orion and his first saint. St. O’Brien gathered followers and established monasteries. By the time he was Eighty years old this humble man had established a wide ranging religion with over 50 monasteries and churches and the Holy City of Douglass. It was said that the City of Douglass had streets lit with magical light, no crime, 5,000 Paladins and 10,000 Preists. Douglass was destroyed over 1000 years ago when Orcus and Yeonaghu launched a massive attack on the city to retrieve the Wand of Orcus which had recently come into the possession of the now venerable St. O’Brien. St. O’Brien was in preparation to destroy the evil artifact when Orcus launched his attack. After three years of siege Orcus realized his worldly forces would be expended before the city fell. With this understanding he tempted, seduced and turned one of the five members of the Rainbow Guard. The Rainbow Guard was St. O’Briens personal guard and the five greatest paladins in the city.

The seduced paladin, Sir Derrick Whiterose flew St. O’Brien out of the city under the guise of saving the venerable saint. On the paladin’s magical horse the two flew to a remote, hidden cave where the Paladin gently laid the Saint on what was to become his death bed. Laying in the Paladin’s backpack, but not resting was The Wand of Orcus. In that quiet cave. Sir Derrick Whiterose drew his famed blade, Durandal, and decapitated the only living saint.

Durandal, the sentient blade, immediately turned on the corrupted paladin, burning him and trying desperately to cut the fallen knight. Whiterose eventually gained control long enough to bury half the blade into the rock floor of the cave. Then the paladin left the cave with the Wand of Orcus in hand, only to find his best friend and most trusted ally, Lanyard, his magical horse had deserted him. When he saw Lanyard leave he fully realized wha the had done. Turning back to the cave he wrapped the Wand of Orcus in St. O’Briens Holy Vestments, thereby hiding the vile artifact from its namesake.

The fallen Paladin then raced across the mountains on foot. Not stopping to eat or rest for a week. He finally arrived at a tiny monastery and passed his wicked cargo off to a innocent friar. Derrick Blackthorne told the friar over a bowl of gruel what was in the clothe wrappings and that it had to be destroyed. The Friar hid the artifact and told no one, praying every day that St. Cuthbert or St. O’Brien might send him someone to take his awful charge away from him. No one came. The old friars last act was to right a note and hide it in the sacramental wine stores. The world continued on as the Wand of Orcus slept, hidden in a wine cellar of a tiny monastery in the mountains.

1200 years passed and a young mischievous friar found the note in the wine cellar. That very night as the peasant friar wondered what to do with the evil item a ringing of the monasteries lone bell foretold invaders. The friar feared Orcus had come for his wand. Running to the wall above the gate the friar was a force of over a dozen Vikings descending on the small cloister from the river. The friar was preparing his final prayers when the jarl of the Vikings, Dankros Arveragus, requested entrance to rest for the evening. The Vikings were admitted, and sat down for a simple meal of gruel with the young friar. The friar soon found that these were not evil men, but men of true heart. And so the Friar Anselm told his short story to the Vikings. A discussion ensued and the leader of the Vikings stood up and announced that they would take the Wand of Orcus and bury it under the World Tree, making innascessible forever.

The quest was carried out and The Viking Jarl, became the King of Daneland, Kalavia, Northern England and Rhyme Isle and the peasant friar re-established the Church of the West as a major power when he became the Arch-Bishop of York.

It is said the fallen Paladin wanders the world trying to make amends for his greedy grab for power, cursed forever.

The Church of the West Today

Today the Church of the West has spread across the whole of the western world. With it's headquarters at the Palace of Saints in Ravenna. The Church is overseen by the Arch-Bishop of Ravenna. The Arch-Bishop of Ravenna is also known as The King Maker as he is recognized as the only person who can bestow noble titles.

The church is based on the idea one supreme god of creation and a host of lesser gods, avatars or demi-gods who are canonized by the church for their demonstration of faith and bestowed with godly powers by the creator. The Creator is known as Orion. Orion Canonized four men, Cuthbert, O'Brien, Dinadain and Hardig. These four Saint's are known as the Canon Saints. With these four the church designed their primary symbol, a cross with each canon saint being one arm of the cross and the center being Orion.

The College of Cardinal's under the Arch-Bishop of Ravenna have the power to canonize any individual who has shown an undying faith for the teaching of Orion and the Church. Those canonized by the church are generally canonized as patron saint's related to their life work. These saints are known as Saints of Patronage and their are many. Any faithful member of the church may be nominated for canonization after they have been called to a higher existence.

Arch-Bishop of Avignon
· Lotan I (1279 to present)

There are many, many divergent sects of the Church these days, and in the last 2 decade since the Winter Wars the Hospitalliers and Templars have filled their ranks. It seems these two knightly orders were originally developed from members of St Obriens rainbow guard, of which they were originally 5 members. Derrick Whiterose was one of the members of the Rainbow Guard himself. It is said that Kargoth was already a saint at this time.

Templars follow St Kargoth and value skill in arms and follow the orders of the Holy Father, taking it upon themselves to do the Holy Fathers bidding. While the Hospitalliers who follow St Cuthbert uphold justice, perhaps even ahead of the church itself.

Jonas would recall the Flagellants as Gundel speaks of them.

They are masters of pain, who believe salvation can only come through pain. They feel we are in the world to serve a penance of suffering, and only through purifying ones self through pain, will one be ready to meet the Creator in Heaven.

So, they not only flail and mutilate their own bodies, but that of their followers as well.

OOC: You better not be starting the reformation movement of Martin Luther early!

Jonas thinks back to if the foundations are listed in order, or if they are all equal. This may be an important distinction in who is right overall in this argument.

Jonas does not like that the Flagellants do not strictly follow the Holy Father. If unchecked, it could cause a rebellion from within the church. Possible seperation and ex-communications are possible, even a full scale "refermation" and nations succeeding from the church to form their own churches. This would severely weaken the church.

It would seem that the followers (Flagellants ) of a direct person Orion caninized and the founding St. O’Brien was a follower of would have more of a say in what the religion said than followers (Templars) of St. Kargoth.

Jonas wonders how the Arch-Bishop of Avignon is chosen as the leader (chosen like the Pope?). Also, if Arch-Bishop of Avignon was or is part of any sect of the church, or is and was above sects.

The Holy Father, His Pious Emminence Lotan of Germania was chosen by the College of Cardinals after a lengthy selection process.

Lotan's full history is unknown to most in the church. He was born and raised in Eastern portions of Germania. He studied in Clermont, Sarbonne, Pont du Falx, and Tarsus. He was assigned to the priory of Antioch and Palmyra early in his carreer after the seminary. He spent nearly a decade there before returning and being posted to the Barony of Zutphen in North Flanders where he quickly was named Bishop of Utrecht, a position he held during the Winter Wars and his Barony managed to help the barony survive without almost no damage. Shortly following the Winter Wars he was elevated to Arch-Bishop of Pont du Falx with the tough assignment of dealing with the new Dragon King who had conquered the great city.

Then in 1278 the Holy Father, Benefice II, killed by Arturo the Assassin and Gellon the Horse Thief. Benefice was only 22 years old at the time. The two assassins also killed the Bishop of Utrecht just weeks before.

Then in 1279 Lotan, Arch-Bishop of Pont du Falx is named as the new Holy Father of the Church of the West. Lotan takes the seat as the Arch-Bishop of Ravenna. Meanwhile, The Black Death hits Florence and kills 150,000 in three weeks. Then in 1280 Year of the Great Famine set in as Jonas and his companions all remember as it was just 5 years ago. The Black Death spread across the western world. 3 million died in 1280. Lotan, The Holy Father moved the seat of the Church of the West to Avignon, much to the dismay of Imperial Senate of Aquitania.

OOC-How much of this history does Camlin know?

IC-As they travel up the road, Camlin would notice how well the animals are treated and how the men relate to one another. He is looking to see if the animals are abused and not just suffering from the hard rigors of war. He also wants to see if the men look as if they choose to be here, or if they seem coerced or forced, like most peasant militia Camlin has seen.

Camlin just knows the basics of the church. He was raised in the Celtic or Irish Church which is much different and less formal. Their ceremonies still have strong ties to the ancient Druidic ceremonies. The Irish Church recognizes the Holy Father, but his is so far away that the Irish tend to follow the older foundations of the church and haven't been corrupted by the current political aspirations of many in the church.

IC
Camlin notices that the animals are fairly well treated, but they are being pushed to their breaking point. It appears that the army is a little short on mounts for they are using horses with minor to serious ailments and injuries, but not major maladies that would be pure cruelty. Few in this army have fresh horses.

The group have reached the summit, a narrow road where a small single tower keep has been built. Perhaps 50 men could stay in the keep, at most. The road here passes through the keep. It is really more of a large gatehouse than a keep. But effective enough to regulate all traffic over Palfrey Pass. The wagons coninue down the slope passing through scrutiny by knights and footmen as they pass. A few provisions are dropped here, mostly food. Then the rest head down toward the Palatinate. Starting down the slope the party sees billows of smoke comming from the bottom and can see two armies massed. One on this side of a small stone wall with a few buildings behind, and a large encampment on the other side of the wall waiting, waiting for the larger battle to come. It appears to be several thousand on each side of the wall.

Camlin will pull up and stop. He closely looks over all the various banners and pennons flying on both sides so that he can remember them if he sees them again. He lets out a low whistle, How long has it been like this? They just staring at each other waiting. What are they waiting for? He will also look to see what kind of mounts the 'other' side has and where they might keep their remuda, if they have one.

The Priest Gundel says,
Almost 3 months. But things have to change. The Templars and their Flagellant masters are calling for reinforcements to trap us on the pass. We will not let that happen.

Things will change soon, very soon. This will not be the last battle for The Palatinate, but the first major battle

Looking down in the valley Camlin see's these banners.
Palfrey Pass side
The Holy See of Trier

Hospitalier Army

other non Hospitallier banners and arms, these are small contingents of around a couple hundred at most.

------------------------------------------------------

Across the wall to the south
The Templar Army

Other banners number 50-100 troops at most

_________________________________________________________

Camlin can see there are several different remuda's in the valley below. The banner with the 3 keys hold 5 Great Horse, Camlin saw one of the great horse up close, they are impressive beasts, standing 18 hands(72") at the withers(shoulder) and easily weighing a full ton(2000 lbs). Added to that they are trained for war Heavy Horse.

Camlin also sees a small group of Templars encamped near a large pavillion with priests. Each of these Templar have the the all black shield with the red cross on it. This group has 50 Heavy Horse, standing 16 hands and weighing at least 1600 pounds. The rest of the horse is a mix of light horse.
